Attitude…Success…Yadah, Yadah, Yadah

Most people have jobs that require working with people. So what is so terrifying about dealing with people? The sort of service the customer gets varies according to the mood we’re in that day.

Phone me on the day I’m going to get my brand new car: “Good morning, it’s a terrific day at Polly’s Pet World! What may I help you with today?” But call me when I’m hormonal and just noticed a hair on my chin: “Polly’s Pet World. Yes, we sell dogs. What gave it away? The large letters on the side of our building that spelled out PETS?”

Call me on Friday after lunch:  “Harriet’s House of Hair. Absolutely! I am able to fit you in this afternoon. Come on over darling and we will fix you right up.” But telephone me Monday morning before I’ve had my caffeine: “Harriet’s House of Hair. You’re getting married so you need your hair done? Is that not just peachy. I wouldn’t shell out too much cash. You know it won’t last. He’s more than likely already sleeping with somebody else. How is Wednesday at two?”

Good thing I’m not employed in the ER. At the start of my shift, I’ll work heroically (like a television emergency room doc) to bring back the disemboweled Teddy Bear brought in with the child afflicted with a splinter. But come to me towards the end of my shift when I’m heading out for a week in the mountains and I’m sorry, but I’ll have to pull the plug. He’s sixty. He has lived long enough.

Our mood affects whether we percieve our place of work as fun, or simply hell with fluorescent lighting. Surprisingly, the amount we achieve is correlated with our state of mind and how we handle our customers. Indeed, that’s common motivational speaker talk, but it is still true. Still, how many people let what’s taking place on any given day affect how they will feel. We wait around on circumstances or other people to determine if you will come across us smiling, or wearing horns and flicking out a forked tongue. Life will invariably have it’s difficult times and people who are tough to cope with. You can’t wait for them to give you happiness. You are accountable for your mood. End of story. It’s up to you to determine whether you consider your job fun, or the third ring of hell. Your success relies on it.
